With little expectations going into September for the Philadelphia Phillies, here are five predictions that are likely to happen as the season concludes.
Maikel Franco has been called up when rosters expanded and will play immediately. He will likely split time with Cody Asche at third base, but Franco has nothing to lose at this point. Franco will likely emerge as the leading candidate to start third base next season.
Jimmy Rollins currently has 17 home runs and 28 stolen bases. You might think how can he not get to 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases? I am just saying that Jimmy Rollins has not been declining as many would have thought. He will likely perform this well until he ends his career as a Phillie.
Ben Revere currently has 40 stolen bases, and if he has a similar August, he will surpass 50 steals. Revere has been an average leadoff hitter this season, despite his low walk percentage. If he gets on base, expect him to do the one thing he does best -- steal bases.
Ryan Howard continues to decline and underperform during his player-friendly contract. If Ryan Howard wants to play during the 2015 season, he will need to hit more than five home runs, his high in any month this season. Howard's job is on the line in September, as if it wasn't already.
With five more games against the Atlanta Braves this season (Sept. 2-3 and 26-28), the Phillies will play the role of spoiler. It will most likely come down to the last series of the season against the Braves. The Braves will have the opportunity to play for the last Wild Card spot, but they will need to win the series against the Phillies to have any chance.
