Some people are starting to suffer from Derek Jeter retirement tour fatigue. There have been more than enough tributes, stories and commercials to go around. But of all the things we’ve seen and heard about the New York Yankees‘ shortstop this year, there’s still one rumor that’s gone unaddressed — the legendary gift baskets.

That is, until now.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Jeter-gift baskets legend, it goes something like this: the New York Post published a story three years back alleging the short stop gave out signed merchandise and other gifts to women he brought home on one-night stands. The ‘story’ made it to the public eye because he supposedly gave the same girl a gift bag twice, because he didn’t remember her from the first time.

Fast forward to the retirement tour and a new post from NYmag.com, and it appears we have some clarification on the most notorious rumor involving New York’s former most eligible bachelor. Here’s Jeter’s response:

“Like I’m giving them signed baseballs and pictures of myself on the way out! Who comes up with a story like that? It said the reason people found out was because I gave the same girl the same basket and I had forgotten I’d given her one–like there are so many people coming through I forgot!”

So there you have it, no merch gift baskets from No. 2. Is he telling the whole truth? Do you believe him?

You can bet that some people won’t, and that this legend will continue to grow over time.
