ALCS Game 3:  Baltimore Orioles vs. Kansas City Royals (Kansas City leads series 2-0)

Monday, October 13th, 2014 at 8:07 p.m.

Probables: Wei-Yin Chen (0-0, 12.27 ERA) vs. Jeremy Guthrie (o-o, 0.00 ERA)

The Kansas City Royals haven’t cooled down one bit since entering postseason play. They remain undefeated in the 2014 postseason after their most recent defeat of the Baltimore Orioles in Game 2 of the ALCS. This matchup had all the makings of a long series, but with the series heading back to Kansas City for three games, it could be shorter than most people had imagined.

While the Royals’ pitching, both starting and relief, get most of the attention on the team, it’s been the bats of Mike Moustakas, Eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon that have been propelling this team forward. Their bullpen has been nearly unhittable as they can call on power arms at any point in the game.

Expected to take the hill for the Orioles in Game 3 is Wei-Yin Chen. Chen has had one start in the postseason, and it came in the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers. It was a rough one. In just three and two-thirds innings, Chen gave up five runs on seven hits. Fortunately for Chen, he didn’t suffer the loss as the Orioles were able to mount a comeback. He cannot have a similar outing on Monday because the Royals’ bullpen is exponentially better than the Tigers. They won’t give you the opportunity to come back.

On the other side, Jeremy Guthrie will get the start against his former team in Game 3. It will be his first appearance in the playoffs, and honestly it’s a bit of a head-scratcher. Jason Vargas may have been the logical choice to go here, especially after his performance in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Los Angeles Angels. Nevertheless, expect Guthrie to be fired up to prove himself.

It’s been 29 years since Kansas City has seen an ALCS, and the crowd will be insane. The pitching matchup is a toss-up, but there is just something going on with the Royals right now, and I am not going against momentum. The Royals will win Game 3 in Kansas City to put a stranglehold on the 2014 ALCS.
