Top 5 Landing Spots For Melky Cabrera

Two years after serving a 50-game PED suspension, Melky Cabrera was able to revitalize his career in 2014, slashing .301/.351/.458 with 16 home runs and 73 RBIs for the Toronto Blue Jays. For as long as it seems like Cabrera has been around, he is still only 30 years old, and the free-agent-to-be should be able to command a pretty nice deal this winter. Without further ado, here are the top five landing spots for the switch-hitting outfielder.

The Toronto Blue Jays appear to be quite interested in prolonging their relationship with Cabrera, who has spoken of his own desire to return to the Blue Jays. According to multiple reports, Toronto is planning to extend Cabrera a qualifying offer, but he will likely be seeking a multi-year deal. It remains to be seen whether or not the Blue Jays will be able to lock Cabrera up, but they can be expected to be in the running for him.

Cabrera was a member of the San Francisco Giants back in 2012 when he was suspended for his aforementioned PED use. He posted an impressive .346 BA and a .906 OPS through 113 games before his suspension was handed down on Aug. 15. With Michael Morse and Pablo Sandoval headed for free agency this winter, the Giants may find themselves in the market for a left fielder and a bat. Having a reunion with Cabrera in 2015 could fill both needs.

With an excellent starting rotation and a dominant bullpen that posted an MLB-best 2.59 ERA, the Seattle Mariners showed in 2014 that they are very close to being a force in the AL West. They may just need another big bat to toss into their light-hitting outfield or fill their DH spot. There could very easily be an opening for Cabrera with the Mariners, especially if free-agent-to-be Kendrys Morales departs after having a disappointing season.

Heading into the offseason, it would hardly be shocking to see the New York Mets look to add an outfielder via the free agent market. Last year's big free agent signing Curtis Granderson had a rather rough year and Chris Young was released in August after hitting just .205, so the Mets' outfield could obviously use a boost. Left field, specifically, remains a question mark, and signing Cabrera could certainly plug that hole.

Many expect the Chicago White Sox to go after a potent left-handed bat or switch-hitter this offseason to help balance their lineup. There have been rumors that the White Sox would like to make a run at Victor Martinez, but it seems unlikely that the Detroit Tigers would let him get away. Cabrera could give the South Siders a stellar back-up option, and he would likely thrive in the hitter-friendly confines of U.S. Cellular Field.
