When it comes to designated hitters -- or any hitter period -- available in MLB's 2015 free agent class, Victor Martinez should be the cream of the crop. But he will be 36 when the season opens. For him, winning a championship may trump a robust payday, as the clock is quickly ticking.

It would take an ideal situation for V-Mart to move over to the NL. Playing 1B is not entirely out of the question, but it would have to be for a contender. The Giants have Brandon Belt, the Dodgers Adrian Gonzalez and the Cardinals Matt Adams. The Mets and Pirates could show interest, but the Nats have a stronger core of hitters and pitchers to push for another postseason appearance in 2015. Plus, Adam LaRoche has a 2015 mutual buyout option.

It's difficult for a big fish to end up in a small pond, but Ned Yost has built a winner out of this small market franchise. There will be plenty of excitement and anticipation heading into their 2015 season. James Shields and incumbent DH Billy Butler are set to be free agents, so that should free up some money for a player like Martinez to have contract discussions with the club.

The Derek Jeter era is over, but that should not be a deterrent. The Captain was a featured sideshow in 2014. The Evil Empire continually has the money to buy/build a winner on short notice, so the Bronx is always an enticing option for any big ticket free agent to hit the market. GM Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi would find a way to work Martinez into their everyday lineup.

With that talented rotation and Robinson Cano's presence, the M's are on the verge of a playoff run. They are in dire need of a dominant right-handed bat. Martinez switch hits, which is perfect. He would be like a far superior Kendry Morales in their lineup. He and Corey Hart will not be back in 2015, so GM Jack Zduriencik may part Puget Sound in order to sign the six-time All-Star as their DH for the next couple of years.

No shock value here at No. 1. It's rumored Martinez would like to work something out fiscally and return to Motown. He and Miguel Cabrera complement each other very well, and Miggy is signed through 2023. A few other big names like Scherzer may be on the move, but the Tigers should still have a well-rounded club in 2015. Their biggest concern will be sharpening up the bullpen.
