The Atlanta Braves need to do some serious retooling of their offense if they want to get back into contention for 2015. Everyone knows they have to find a way to rid themselves of B.J. Upton, and odds are they will trade away one of either Jason Heyward or Justin Upton. Another player they should also consider trading, however, is starting pitcher Mike Minor.
Teams around MLB covet young starting pitching. Minor would be an attractive trade piece for almost every team across the league. Either to restock the farm system or bring major league ready talent, Minor could be a piece that could yield great returns for the Braves.
He was one of the best in the NL during the 2013 season and showed it in flashes when healthy during 2014. He’s still under team control through the 2018 season, which would be a big plus for a team trading for him.
The Braves have pitching depth and already an abundance of youngsters in the rotation with even more talented arms waiting in the wings. If ever they were going to deal from this depth the time would be now, because a major improvement on offense is needed if they hope to compete. Trading Minor would bring some players they could use, clear payroll as Minor will receive a raise through arbitration and open up a slot in the rotation where the Braves could maybe sign a veteran to help lead the youngsters.
There are many pieces the Braves can choose to deal, but few that are more valuable than Minor. He would be a great presence in the rotation for Atlanta, but he could also help solve the glaring lineup holes the currently exist.
That may be his greatest value to this team at this point. Whoever the new GM is, he’ll have a big decision to make.
