Carlos Gomez’s Snub From Gold Glove List Is a Joke

Carlos Gomez is one of the most electric players in all of the game today. He is not only a player with both speed and power at the plate, but he is a Gold Glove defender in the outfield. Just watch a Milwaukee Brewers game without Gomez and his absence is noticeable almost immediately, covering a vast amount of ground, making the play of every Brewers’ outfielder that much better. He not only makes all the routine plays, but makes the hard ones with ease. This season as the Gold Glove finalists were announced, he was the biggest snub that was left off the ballot.

Denard Span, Billy Hamilton and Juan Lagares are great players, but they cannot even compare to the outfield talent that Gomez displays on a daily basis. Just ask Hamilton’s teammate Joey Votto what he thinks about Gomez in center field, a player who has twice been robbed of home runs by the stellar outfielder.

Although he missed 14 games this past season and played hurt through others, Gomez finished second in the National League in putouts by a center fielder. He finished the season with a minimal five errors and a .986 fielding percentage, the end result of his rocket throwing arm. As a center fielder, he also finished the 2014 season with the second best range factor/ nine innings in all of the league.

Gomez’s continuous motor sometimes rubs people the wrong way, but it should not be something that limited his votes. By playing the game hard on every play at a 100 percent effort, he remains a shining example of a rare type of player that can change a game on the defensive side of the field.

The end of season awards are meant to honor the best players in the game, but with Gomez left off the ballot, one of the elite players will be empty handed.
