Top 5 Landing Spots for Asdrubal Cabrera

Asdrubal Cabrera is going to be given a decent contract this offseason because of his offensive production and his ability to play both middle infield positions. Cabrera started last season with the Cleveland Indians at shortstop and was later traded to the Washington Nationals, where he shifted over to second base. At 28 years old, Cabrera is in the prime of his career and teams should offer him at least a three-year deal.

The New York Mets have a young shortstop of the future on the roster in Ruben Tejada. This season, though, he did not play the part. Tejada’s numbers were not particularly impressive, so the Mets might want to bring in another shortstop to play as a stopgap until he is ready. Asdrubal Cabrera could fill in for a couple years and still get a big payday afterwards if he performs well in New York.

The Miami Marlins took a big step forward this season and should look to continue that upward trend. There is young talent in the middle infield for the Marlins, but those players aren't quite ready to handle everyday playing duties. Like with the Mets, Cabrera could fill in for a season or two until those younger players are ready. Whether Cabrera plays shortstop or second base for the Marlins, he would be a key addition to a team on the rise.

After a slow start in Washington, Cabrera heated up and played a key role in helping the Nationals reach the playoffs. The Nationals should make resigning Cabrera a priority. He put up good numbers last season and has expressed an interest in continuing to play in Washington. If the price is right, the Nationals should try to bring Cabrera back, but with the number of suitors might push his price out of Washington’s range.

The Oakland A’s seem content to use Eric Sogard at second base, but the shortstop position is a question mark heading into the offseason. Jed Lowrie has been the shortstop in Oakland for the last two seasons, and after a down year from Lowrie, the A’s might be looking elsewhere. Oakland can’t afford to pay too much money for a shortstop. So, assuming the price isn’t too high, Asdrubal Cabrera should be on Oakland’s radar.

The New York Yankees didn’t just lose the face of the franchise when Derek Jeter retired, the Yankees also lost a highly productive shortstop. There are a lot of options at shortstop in free agency and Asdrubal Cabrera is both cost effective and productive. He will be able to step into the Yankees’ line-up and provide the same production as Jeter did this season, if not more.
