The pieces are finally starting to come together for the Chicago Cubs. Not only do they have one of the best farm systems in all of baseball, they now have one of the best managers in all of baseball.

Maddon-to-the-Cubs rumors started last week shortly after he opted out of the final year of this contract in Tampa. At first, it was thought that he’d possibly head to L.A. to manage the Dodgers. But once those rumors were shot down, the Cubs became the front-runners for his services, despite the fact that they just hired a new manager (Rick Renteria) one year earlier.

This is a partnership that just flat out makes sense. Chances to land a skipper the caliber of Maddon only come around every so often. He’s proven he can win consistently without a ton of payroll, and the Cubs are in need of a great mentor for their many young (potential) stars. Eventually, Maddon will likely have much more to work with than he ever did in Tampa. Theo Epstein may not fully open up the team’s checkbook for him this offseason, but you can bet that time isn’t too far off.

For a change, Cubs fans everywhere are undoubtedly happy in October. It’s early, but this could prove to be the move of the MLB offseason.
