Incredible World Series Run Changes Kansas City Royals’ Franchise and Their Fans Forever

Every day begins with a bright spark of optimism and a noticeably increased heart rate for fans of a playoff team.

This feeling is one I’ve failed to grow accustomed to during this incredible run by the Kansas City Royals, as each night’s game quickly becomes the only thing that matters aside from shelter and sustenance.

Whether it’s the San Francisco Giants or my hometown Royals claiming the 2014 World Series title tonight, these new emotions that all fans experienced daily throughout the last month will soon give way to some other completely unique feeling. Regardless of what happens from here, the Fall Classic and the MLB  season will end tonight at Kauffman Stadium.

There is no going back to those same old Royals after this run. This season disrupted the patterns of every fan involved in a major and irrevocable way. Newcomers to the team or even the sport devoted hours to baseball for the first time in their lives, only to realize that they’ll probably need to do so next year, as well. The old diehards, who lived through season after season of disappointment before finally reaching this inexplicably satisfying moment, suddenly needed to base their schedules around three extra months of relevant Royals baseball.

Instead of journalists going on and on about how KC doesn’t have what it takes to lure a big-time free agent, sports writers across the country are explaining why so many free agents would love to be a Royal in 2015 and many years to come. Instead of eying Winter Ball and watching other clubs chase their postseason dreams, Royals fans and members of the media are watching their city’s team begin a new era of success.

I’ve cried a lot already during this month of absolute madness. Regardless of who wins Game 7 tonight, I’ll soon be crying again, not out of sorrow or disappointment, but out of unrestrainable joy and awe. Maybe that’s when all this might finally sink in.
