It seems like just yesterday that Kevin Youkilis was a cornerstone of the Boston Red Sox franchise. But as is the case with many professional athletes, Youk got old in a hurry. At 35-years of age and one season removed from playing MLB, he’s decided to call it a career.

After helping lead the Red Sox to a World Series title in 2007 and three All-Star seasons from 2008-2011, Youk’s career began to decline quickly. He was traded to the White Sox midway through 2012, played one partial season for the Yankees in 2013 and then another partial season in Japan this past season.

It was clear that his days in the show were over, and that’s why today’s announcement of his retirement is a good thing. His time in MLB had come and gone, and for a guy who’s made millions — what would be the point in hanging around in lesser leagues at way less than 100 percent?

For Red Sox fans, there are plenty of good times to remember. Youkilis was always a fan favorite in Bean Town, and he likely always will be. Years from now most people won’t even remember that he left Boston in 2012.

Happy retirement, Youk.
