After missing the playoffs for the third-consecutive season, the Philadelphia Phillies have some serious work to do. Whether it is realistic to compete or not, in 2015, it certainly seems that general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. is prepared to spend money during MLB's offseason. Here are five players, he should consider bringing on board.

The Phillies need a power-hitter, and Cruz provides that. However, at 34 years old, he is a likely candidate to be overpaid.

4. Max Scherzer, SP

This would be a blockbuster signing, but Amaro has pulled these types of deals off in the past. If Philadelphia hangs onto Cole Hamels, then pursuing Scherzer as a 1-2 punch is simply a no-brainer.

3. James Shields, SP

If the Phillies decide to spend on a starting pitcher, Shields may be a more realistic option, as he most likely will not command the $ 100 million deal that Scherzer will seek.

2. Pablo Sandoval, 3B

It would be a surprise to see him leave the Giants, but Philadelphia should pursue Sandoval hard. Even with the younger Cody Asche in the fold, if the team wants to compete in 2015, then they will need a more reliable player at the hot corner.

According to reports, the Phillies are in hot-pursuit of Tomas, and rightfully so. He is only 23 years old, and would be a cornerstone for years to come.
