Outfielder Colby Rasmus has played six seasons in MLB and has only made one postseason appearance. Signing with the Detroit Tigers will change that.
The Tigers’ biggest need is their bullpen, but they also have a void to fill in centerfield. Rasmus would be a perfect replacement for what Detroit lost when they traded away Austin Jackson, and he should strongly consider signing with the Tigers.
Rasmus was a first round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2005 and has always had a ton of potential. He made his MLB debut for St. Louis in 2009 and had a very good rookie season, followed by an even better 2010 season.
In that 2010 season, he hit .276, with 23 home runs and 66 RBIs. Since that season, however, he has been very up and down with both the Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays. Some years he looks like a potential All-Star and others he looks like an average outfielder. With the Tigers’ coaching staff and veteran leadership on the field, Rasmus could finally live up to his potential in Detroit.
The Tigers are looking to fill the void left by Austin Jackson after he was traded as part of the deal that netted them David Price. Rajai Davis did a decent job sliding over into the center field spot, but he is much better suited for a corner outfield position. Rasmus is an above average fielder with the ability to hit .270 and 20-25 home runs when he’s playing to his potential. He would be a tremendous addition to the Tigers’ outfield and fill the one glaring weak spot they currently have in their lineup. An outfield of Rasmus, Davis and JD Martinez would be more than sufficient in the Tigers’ quest for a World Series.
As arguably the top centerfielder available in free agency this year, Rasmus will have plenty of options. If he wants to win and finally live up to his great potential, however, there’s really only one option. The Tigers are the best fit for Rasmus and he should strongly consider signing with Detroit.
