While the St. Louis Cardinals don't have many holes to fill in free agency, the team's payroll will climb in the next few years as the Cardinals do fill whatever needs will help them to win a World Series. Here are five players the Cardinals could pursue this winter.

Cabrera would be an inexpensive alternative to a Nelson Cruz power hitting type, although Cabrera will likely command a three-year deal. With the recent death of Oscar Taveras in a car crash, the Cardinals could fill an outfield spot with an established star while giving Randal Grichuk, Stephen Piscotty and others more seasoning.

4. Brett Anderson

The Cardinals really need a one-year rental pitcher until some of the minor leaguers from that rich farm system come up. Anderson may be had for a song due to his back issues, and a small investment could land insurance for the Cards in case Michael Wacha or Jaime Garcia get hurt again.

3. Luke Gregerson

Although the Cardinals had a decent relief corps, there were a couple of pitchers who didn't quite work out. It's also likely Pat Neshek will leave via free agency, so the Cardinals need a quality relief arm that could swallow one or two innings of work per game.

2. Kelly Johnson

Because Johnson can play second, third and the outfield, he can spell players like Kolten Wong, Matt Carpenter and other outfielders on a regular basis. His utility role is good for a team like St. Louis, which could drop either Mark Ellis or Peter Bourjos.

1. Chris Capuano

Because Capuano can start or throw in relief, he might be good as a swing pitcher. Capuano has pitched in relief in recent seasons, but if the Cardinals need an emergency starter then he would be a good bet.
