5 Positions Where the Pirates are Set for Years

The Pittsburgh Pirates have strung together a couple of very successful seasons that culminated in two playoff appearances in a row. The team’s resurgence has brought fans out of the woodwork all around the city, helping ticket sales see a drastic increase. The Pirates could lose a key to that success in Russell Martin, but fans shouldn’t worry because the Pirates have a core group of young players who will keep the winning going.

Neil Walker is a player who has continued to improve since the Pirates drafted him in 2004. His defense is still a work in progress, but he has become one of the best hitting second basemen in the league. This is evidenced by his recent Silver Slugger award. Walker is Pittsburgh born and raised and is arbitration eligible this year. The Pirates should look to sign him long-term now in order to keep him from hitting the open market in two years.

Just two seasons ago, shortstop was a position of question for Pittsburgh. The team brought in Clint Barmes for his defense, but it was clear that his bat was a hindrance in the lineup. The Pirates called up Jordy Mercer, who began platooning with Barmes and, this past season, took over shortstop completely. Working with Barmes helped Mercer improve his defense and his bat has come along nicely. Mercer won’t hit free agency until 2019.

The Pirates felt that the third baseman of the future was on the roster when they drafted Pedro Alvarez. However, his streaky hitting and atrocious defense have changed his position with the team. That being said, the third baseman of the future is on the roster, and he is Josh Harrison. Highlight reels were made when he successfully completed, not one but, two run downs this year. His all around talent makes him indispensable in Pittsburgh.

The best outfield in baseball this year will reside in Pittsburgh. The Pirates have three of the fastest players in the league roaming the grass in PNC Park. Covering left field is Starling Marte, who the Pirates signed to a six-year deal in March. Marte was best known for his speed when he was called up to the majors, but his average and OBP have been fantastic. Marte’s numbers have increased each year and will continue to do so as he matures.

The glue that holds the Pirates together is centerfielder Andrew McCutchen. He is an All-Star, a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger winner, a league MVP and the face of the franchise. He is one of the best, if not the best, complete players in the MLB. McCutchen can hit for power and for average. He can also steal 20 bases a year and can make spectacular catches in the outfield. As long as McCutchen is wearing black and gold, the Pirates will contend.
