As we approach MLB Free Agency, it appears that OF Melky Cabrera will not be re-signing with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Toronto made an offer to Cabrera earlier in the offseason and they seem eager to bring him back. Unfortunately, General Manger Alex Anthopoulos hasn’t budged much in his contract discussions and it appears that Melky is serious about testing the waters.
Melky currently has a handful of teams inserted in him, as reportedly at least five different teams have inquired about the 30-year-old outfielder.
The New York Mets are making a lot of headlines and are once again searching for a veteran outfielder, as Chris Young and Curtis Granderson severally disappointed throughout the 2014 season. However, the Mets likely don’t have the money to offer Cabrera the multiple year deal he has his sights on. The odds of Melky heading to Flushing seems highly unlikely.
Some other teams in the mix are the Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, and even the Kansas City Royals.
Of all the team where Melky could end up, though, his best case scenario would be to sign with the Seattle Mariners. The team has plenty of money to spend and could send Melky a big time offer this fall.
Additionally, Melky could slide into the lineup just ahead of All-Star Robinson Cano. The second basemen is a .300 hitter, but he didn’t get much protection in Seattle’s lineup last season. Adding Cabrera would instantly give Cano a legitimate stick in front of him in the order and will allow him to see more hittable pitches.
Cabrera posted a .301/.351/.458 slash line to go along with 16 home runs and 73 RBIs in 2014. He can be a reliable top-of-the-order hitter and someone that can instantly add offensive power to Seattle’s lineup. Look for the Mariners to make a serious offer for Cabrera very soon.
