Scott Boras is probably the best, but definitely the most hated agent in all of baseball. He drives up prices on his clients (which is his job), but the ways he does it are often frowned upon. For one, he never negotiates contract extensions for his clients during the middle of their deals. In other words, he makes sure every one of his clients hits free agency.
This, and his many other tactics irk front offices across the country. Today New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson spoke out about the polarizing agent. He had this surprisingly candid thing to say about Boras:
“Boras has been shopping near the meat section. That’s where he gets his bull—-.”
This is in mocking reference to the fact that Boras has been especially critical of the Mets’ free agency activity over the last few seasons, saying they’ve been shopping in the “fruits and nuts” and “freezer” section while trying to find low-cost free agents. These comments come just days after the Mets made the first splash of MLB free agency by signing outfielder Michael Cuddyer to a two-year, $21 million deal.
Perhaps, this signifies the Mets’ change in philosophy this offseason as they try to win in 2015. Whatever the case may be, the beef (pun intended) between Alderson and Boras is unlikely to end anytime soon, but fans of baseball shouldn’t be complaining. After all, during the nitty gritty of the MLB offseason and free agency period, we could all use a little comic relief every now and then.
Look for Boras’ response to the comments to become the latest piece of entertainment.
