Seattle Mariners Make Smart Investment With New Contract For Kyle Seager
Things are slowly but surely turning around for the Seattle Mariners. After four straight losing seasons, the M’s broke through in 2014 with a respectable 87-75 record. Seattle has also been linked to several big name free agents/players on the trade block this offseason. But before the Mariners potentially makes a splash on the open market, they’ve decided to do some spending in-house
Third baseman Kyle Seager has agreed to a seven-year, $100 million extension with the club.
Seager deal is 7/$100M and includes 8th-year club option for up to $20M with escalators. Contract will be official once he passes physical.

Seager is coming off a career season where he made his first All-Star game appearance, won his first Gold Glove and drove in 96 runs while batting .268. He also smashed a career-high 25 home runs.
Some fans are probably a little perplexed by the massive deal for a seemingly above average player. But keep in mind that Seager is only 27, and that the deal is ‘club-friendly,’ as Ken Rosenthal points out.
Seager deal is three arb years plus four free-agent years. Yes, $100M sounds like a lot but this could be a club-friendly deal in time.

Seager is not done winning Gold Gloves, and he’s not done making ASG appearances. He’s going to be nothing but solid and then some for the Mariners at the hot corner for years to come. Given his ability to play top-notch defense and hold his own at the plate — this new deal should prove to be money well spent.
