5 Things the New York Mets Should Be Thankful For

The New York Mets are in a state of rebuilding. They’ve been in that state for nearly six years now, as their last winning season came in 2008. It seems, however, that the Mets are finally poised to break the mold this season and compete in the NL East. Heading into 2015, here are five things the Mets should be thankful for.

After another poor offensive season, the Mets changed the dimensions of their right field wall. This marks the second time they’ve done so since Citi Field opened in 2009. The new, closer wall should benefit the likes of Lucas Duda, Curtis Granderson and captain David Wright. With the potential to be a better offensive team, Mets fans should be excited for 2015.

Everyone knows the Yankees are better because they’ve won 27 World Series. Well, right now they aren’t that much better. They’ve also lost their captain, Derek Jeter, to retirement, and they’re in a low place right now. They've still won a championship more recently, but going into 2015, the Mets may have more optimism. At least the Mets can be thankful of that.

I haven’t listened to every broadcast team across MLB, but their SNY and WOR teams have to be among the best. Howie Rose and Gary Cohen are encyclopedias of Mets history, and with Josh Lewin, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez filling out their respective teams, you’ve got great commentary. They make it difficult to decide whether to listen to the game on radio or watch on TV.

The New York Mets have plenty of young arms. Fact. The Mets and their fans have seen the San Francisco Giants win three World Series in five years with young, talented pitching, and it has them chomping at the bit. This brings me to my final point.

Of all the Mets’ young talent, Matt Harvey is atop the list. He was an All-Star two years ago, and he’ll likely continue on that path in 2015. Harvey brings a competitive spirit the Mets desperately need. When he’s on the mound it seems both the Mets and their fans are more excited about the game. Hopefully he’ll lead the team again this season as they look to take a big step forward.
