For anyone that does not understand why the Boston Red Sox would deal Yoenis Cespedes after acquiring him halfway through the 2013 MLB season clearly is unaware of the thought process behind the move. Many will point out the Detroit Tigers came out ahead in the trade, but the Red Sox bolstered their starting rotation by acquiring Rick Porcello.

After signing Hanley Ramirez, who is willing to play outfield, Boston decided it was time to make a deal. Even though Cespedes was somewhat productive for the Red Sox in the 51 games he played, the reality is pitching is what needs to get better if Boston wants to find their way back to the World Series. For that reason, dealing for Porcello is a great call.

The right-hander is coming off the best season of his six-year career in which he went 15-13 with a 3.43 earned run average, 129 strikeouts and three compete-game shutouts in 32 appearances (31 starts). He also managed to limit hitters to just a .268 opponent batting average.

It is true Porcello becomes a free agent after the 2015 season. With that said, the Red Sox are a franchise that does not try to look too far ahead. With the pieces they have on the roster, they are looking to win immediately, which means becoming legitimate contenders once again next season. Not to mention, the chances of Porcello re-signing with Boston could remain good depending on what happens throughout the year.

In reality, the deal is good for all parties involved. Both teams had depth at the position they traded and got quality pieces in return. What it will come down to now is which player will make their new team better down the stretch in September.
