A week removed from the Winter Meetings, the New York Mets still are in search for a shortstop. The free agent market is rather weak at the position, and the the only way the Mets can land an impact bat at shortstop is through a trade.

It appears that the Mets don’t want to part ways with their plethora of highly-talented pitching prospects. They have to look elsewhere because starting the season with Wilmer Flores as the starting shortstop is inexcusable. The Mets need to take a run at Korean sensation Jung-Ho Kang.

It just makes too much sense for the Mets. Although Sandy Alderson may have concerns about how his power and defense may translate to the major leagues, the signing of Kang will show Mets fans that the team is willing to spend money to win and move out of baseball purgatory.

The signing would mean more than just his play on the field. Kang would be playing in a big market on a team with massive amounts of potential. The Mets are in desperate need of a shortstop who could be potentially put them over the top and into the playoffs for the first time since 2006, and Kang may be the player to do that.

Kang would also drive attendance numbers. New York City has one of the highest Korean populations in the United States, and the Mets’ attendance numbers are in the bottom third of the league. Higher attendance rates means more money, and that will result in much more for the Mets long-term.
