The New York Mets have made a couple of free agent signings this offseason, but as we move into January, things have been surprisingly quiet on the trade front. The Mets certainly have some viable trade chips, especially among their strong contingent of pitchers, but general manager Sandy Alderson has not pulled the trigger on any trades. But with plenty of time left in the offseason, here are five players the Mets could still look to trade.

Colon is unlikely to be traded, as Sandy Alderson has said the team likes him and the Mets are going to need his experience if they expect to be in a playoff race next September. Of course, you never know when the Mets are going to need to cut payroll, which could make Colon a trade candidate. Also, as the free agent market dries up, Colon could become a target for teams looking for starting pitching, so the Mets could receive an enticing offer.

4. Ruben Tejada

The Mets wouldn't get much in return for Tejada, but after the way he's performed the last two seasons, they need to part ways with him. Tejada may also be better off leaving New York. It wouldn't be hard to find another backup middle infielder on the free agent market, making Tejada expendable. Even if they can't find a veteran replacement for him, Matt Reynolds or Wilfredo Tovar could fill that role.

3. Daniel Murphy

All signs point to the Mets keeping Murphy in 2015, even after a year or more of speculation that he could be traded. But if the Mets end up trading for a shortstop with offensive prowess, Wilmer Flores could be moved to second base and Murphy traded. Also, if teams get desperate for an offensive upgrade at second base, the Mets could still get an offer for Murphy that could entice them to trade him before the season.

2. Jon Niese

Niese is probably the most valuable asset among players the Mets are willing to trade, so there's a realistic chance he gets dealt as the Mets look to trade some of their excess pitching. Teams are a little worried about the health of his shoulder, which could make it difficult for the Mets to get back what they think he's worth. But as spring approaches, the price for Niese could go up enough for the Mets to pull the trigger on a deal.

Ever since the winter meetings, Gee's days with the Mets have appeared to be numbered. The Mets could have made a deal for him then, but they've decided to wait and see how the market develops into January. But there have been reports of several teams interested in Gee, which could lead to the Mets getting something substantial in return for him. That makes him the most likely player the Mets will trade before the start of spring training.
