The hot stove has been cool for the New York Mets for quite some time. They’ve made a couple of free agent signings this offseason, but they have yet to make any trades. At some point before the start of the 2015 season, the Mets figure to make some kind of a deal, and here are five players who could be involved.

5. Daniel Murphy

The Mets are still trying to make an effort to upgrade at shortstop, and in the event that happens they'll then have the opportunity to trade Murphy. There are a lot of reasons why the Mets should keep Murphy, but if they don't trade him in 2015 they'll likely lose him to free agency after the season and get nothing in return. This should encourage the Mets to move him before the season.

4. Rafael Montero

The Mets are still trying to upgrade at shortstop before the start of the season, but Sandy Alderson isn't going to give up Noah Syndergaard or Steven Matz to make it happen. That means Montero becomes the next best pitching prospect the Mets have to use in a trade. If the Mets make a trade before the start of the season, there's a good chance Montero will be involved.

3. Cesar Puello

If Puello doesn't make the opening day roster, the Mets will have to pass him through waivers in order to get him back to the minors which is unlikely to happen. With Michael Cuddyer and John Mayberry Jr. signed during the offseason, there is simply no room for Puello in the Mets' outfield. So if he's not going to be on the team anyway, the Mets should try to trade Puello and get something in return.

2. Dillon Gee

The Mets have to trade a starter before the season begins, and Gee is the best candidate. He's not a power pitcher like the rest of the Mets' starting staff, so he's only going to fall further down the depth chart when Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz are ready for the big leagues. There also appear to be multiple teams interested in Gee, making it imperative that the Mets trade him.

After the last two seasons, the Mets need to part ways with Tejada, and he would probably be better off getting out of New York as well. The Mets can find a backup middle infielder elsewhere, including in-house options like Matt Reynolds and Wilfredo Tovar. The Mets are one injury or slump from Wilmer Flores away from being forced to make Tejada their starting shortstop, and they can't allow that to be an option in 2015.
