Internet trolls are rarely above reprehension. Sometimes they reveal a slight sliver of humor, but usually, their place in intelligent conversation is nonexistent. Although they may never go away — because as I implied, they are mostly pathetic — they should be called out when being abominable. It’s a fine line to offer infamy to someone who doesn’t deserve the attention, but egregious actions like the one directed toward Curt Schilling’s daughter deserve to be scorched by the heat of the spotlight.

Regardless of your opinion of Schilling, the “bloody sock” and his antiquated views on scientific progress, no dignified person deserves to receive misogynistic and tasteless tweets directed at their daughter.

Last Friday, Schilling sent out a congratulatory tweet on behalf of his daughter, commending her on committing to the Salve Regina softball team as a pitcher. It’s quite shocking that Schilling, former ace of the Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies, would ever tweet such a thing on such a related topic to his former profession, huh?

Schilling called out Adam Nagel and Sean MacDonald, two guys who fired back to Schilling’s publicized praise of his daughter with tweets containing overtones of sexual violence. MacDonald, a part-time employee of the New York Yankees, was promptly terminated from his position.

Schilling took a proper proactive approach and the Yankees followed up with the correct protocol. You have freedom of expression, but you don’t have freedom from consequence. You can’t scream “Bomb!” in a movie theater, and you certainly are not entitled to the vitriolic harassment of a young woman.

Props to Schilling, as well as the Yankees, for standing up and and standing out, willing these trolls to stand down.
