5 San Francisco Giants Prospects Who Could Get Called Up in May 2015

Adam Duvall San Francisco Giants — The San Francisco Giants are off to a predictably horrid start in their third World Series defense over five seasons. The odd-year stigma continues to plague the City by the Bay while manager Bruce Bochy is forced to do battle with a blatantly flawed roster. The Giants are not completely incapable of earning a playoff berth in the parity-laden National League, but might need to soon rely on an influx of young talent in order to ignite a spark.

The Giants’ outfield will suddenly become crowded when Hunter Pence returns from forearm surgery, but should an injury occur, Bochy could elect to carry a fifth outfielder as opposed to bolstering the roster’s infield depth. Parker, a former second-round pick, would likely be that guy. He owns a whopping 1.072 OPS with six home runs and 20 RBI in 63 at-bats at AAA-Sacramento this season.

Strickland had been dubbed the Giants’ future closer late last season, but was optioned to AAA toward the end of camp due to a crowded bullpen loaded with talent. The Giants’ biggest strength doesn’t figure to endure an overhaul anytime soon, but Strickland would likely be be Bochy’s go-to guy should an injury occur. The flame-throwing righty owns a 0.82 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 8.2 innings of work in 2015.

The Giants are plush with up-and-coming bullpen arms. Okert is no exception. The 23-year-old farmhand is on the fast track, taking his talents to AAA in just third full season as a professional. Okert, a left-hander, figures to eventually replace either Javier Lopez or Jeremy Affeldt in the Giants’ pen, but could earn a call-up this season should the club need a fresh arm. He owns a 0.90 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 10.0 innings of work in 2015.

Crick is widely considered the most promising prospect in the Giants’ farm system. The future ace right-hander has excelled in three starts at the Double-A level this season, posting a 1.42 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 12.2 innings. Injuries have tested the Giants’ rotation depth in the early-going. Further complications in the starting five could potentially force Bochy’s hand, and result in a premature call-up for the Giants' top-rated prospect.

Giants’ fans have been rabid in vocally expressing their dislike for newcomer Casey McGehee, who flaunts a microscopic .173 batting average with 12 strikeouts and a league-leading eight GIDPs in 52 at-bats this year. McGehee’s extended struggles could land Duvall a May call-up, and a starting gig at the hot corner. Duvall has shredded PCL pitching to date, recording a 1.059 OPS with 13 extra-base hits and 16 RBI in 19 games.

This was a rather bizarre situation. San Francisco Giants hurler Johnny Cueto was struck in the head by a line drive on his first pitch against Oakland on Monday. Instead of coming right out of the game to be examined, Cueto remained on the mound. After the game, he went to the hospital just to be safe. He's fine according to reports, but why Giants manager Bruce Bochy let him pitch is beyond me.
