5 Philadelphia Phillies Who Must Be Dealt Before 2015 Trade Deadline

When a team is sitting right at the bottom of all MLB teams in total wins like the Philadelphia Phillies, every idea and every player is on the table as the team positions to get better in the future. At the top of the list, though, are these five who are most likely to bring back a haul of prospects before the July 31 trade deadline.

Some might see Aaron Harang, 37, as a keeper because he comes at a bargain price. That’s precisely why the Phillies should trade him now while he has a 4-3 record and a 2.03 ERA for a last-place team. With a plethora of injuries to starting rotations throughout baseball, Harang becomes the kind of economical option that could pry a decent prospect from a contender.

Coming off a .306 season, Revere is just the kind of table-setter a power-hitting American League team could find appealing. He can hit and his ability to steal bases disrupts innings and provides 2-3-4 hitters with better pitches to drive out of the park. The Phils already have a player like Revere in Odubel Herrera and they only need one.

3. Cody Asche

Two years ago, Asche was one of the top third-base prospects in baseball coming off a couple of outstanding minor league seasons. The Phillies could not afford to bring him along slowly and brought him up a year ago with mixed results. He could turn into an outstanding third baseman for someone someday, but it won't be with the Phillies because Maikel Franco is the future at that position, making Asche expendable.

One of the hottest trade rumors in baseball over the past several months has involved Cole Hamels being traded to the Boston Red Sox. Those talks cooled first over the Phillies insisting that Triple-A catching prospect Blake Swihart be part of any deal. Now that they have come off that demand, a Hamels trade before July appears more likely.

Having set career save records for two of the oldest franchises in baseball, Jonathan Papelbon could become the first player in the history of MLB to set records for three teams if he is not packaged with Hamels in a potential deal with the Red Sox. With a 1.20 ERA and eight saves, he should be at the top of any contender’s wish list—especially a contender with a shaky bullpen.
