The New York Mets started the 2015 season on fire, winning 13 of their first 16 games. The fast start allowed the Mets to build a big early lead in the National League East and it appeared that this young team was going to have a fine season.
However, things have not gone so well lately. Since their fast start, the Mets have gone 10-14 and have lost six of their last nine games after falling to the St. Louis Cardinals 10-2 on Tuesday night.
The cause of the losing streak is painfully obvious. The Mets simply cannot score enough runs to support their pitchers. Over their last nine games, the Mets have scored three runs or less six times. That is simply not enough offense to win games.
None of the Mets’ regular starters are hitting higher than .289. As a team, the Mets are hitting .238, which is 14th in the National League. They are 10th in runs scored and home runs, 12th in on-base percentage and 14th in slugging percentage. Clearly, the Mets are in need of a boost on offense.
New York has outstanding pitching, but the pitchers can only do so much. The Mets are second in the National League in ERA (2.90) and first in quality starts. But if the offense is unable to score, those numbers won’t matter.
It could be that the batting order needs to be switched, or it could be that the Mets need to make a deal to get a bat in the lineup. Either way, New York must do something to fix its offense if the Mets want to be in the race at the end of the season.
