The  Boston Red Sox have really set the standard for inconsistent play for the better part of a month now. One reason for this is because of the starting rotation, which started out well but has been one of the worst in MLB.

A big reason for that is because of Joe Kelly. He might have some of the best stuff in the rotation, but there have been performances like the one he had on Memorial Day against the Minnesota Twins, where he gave up seven runs in just over an inning. A debacle like that could not have happened at a worse time, as it ruined any momentum the Red Sox had picked up over the weekend.

Kelly had this same problem with his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals. He has great stuff, but he seems to struggle to maintain it three or four times through the batting order. It appears as though he is thinking too much on the mound and that is getting him in trouble.

If he was a reliever, he can just rear back, throw and get batters out. Boston has been looking for another power arm and Kelly can be that guy. Boston has been struggling to stay afloat, and they are very lucky that they are in the remarkably weak  AL East. In any other division, they would be already written off. The Red Sox need to make improvements, and moving Kelly to the pen would be a great way to do that and not lose a player in the process.
