Not many times do you find a team maintains success, despite having star players sit on the disabled list. Enter the Washington Nationals, who may have the best team on paper in all of baseball, but are currently fighting the injury bug. The Nationals are hovering above .500 on the season despite having two starting pitchers and a key offensive piece on the disabled list.

Anthony Rendon was a crucial part of last season’s success and he is again joining the lineup after returning from an oblique injury suffered during a rehab assignment. He should give a boost to a lineup which features Bryce Harper and his 18 home runs. Washington recently lost OF Jayson Werth due to a wrist fracture, so the return of Rendon comes at a key time.

The Nationals are also without two crucial parts of their starting rotation as Doug Fister and Stephen Strasburg currently reside on the disabled list. Both are expected to make a return from the disabled list sometime this month, and that could give the Nationals a big boost and help them push the division lead out of the New York Mets‘ reach.

Washington, when healthy, has arguably the best rotation in all of baseball, and that can help them to success in the postseason. Their biggest competition in the National League seems to be the St. Louis Cardinals, who led baseball with 37 wins. If they can sustain success and not getheavily bitten by the injury bug, the Nationals should be able to take out the Cardinals as they have more firepower in the lineup.

If you look to the American League, there are a few teams who could make a World Series appearance, and it will be an interesting race down the stretch in the AL. The Houston Astros currently have the best record in the AL with a 34-22 mark, but the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals are hot on their heels.

The likelihood of Minnesota sustaining this level of play is not very high given their overall depth, but they could surprise. It seems as if the Astros and Royals are the frontrunners to represent the AL when October rolls around.

But when the dust settles in October, expect to see the Washington Nationals hoisting the title behind their stacked rotation and explosive lineup.
