The run on shortstops was finally broken when the Texas Rangers drafted UC Santa Barbara starting pitcher Dillon Tate with the fourth pick in the 2015 MLB Draft. Tate was drafted more based on the potential of what he could become rather than what he has right now.

Tate has a projectable frame at 6-foot-2-inches tall and is extremely athletic for a pitcher. The right-hander brings the heat with a 92-98 mph fastball and pairs it with a hard slider, which is by far his best secondary pitch. Tate rounds out his arsenal with a good, but not great, curveball and a changeup that has real potential to become a plus pitch.

While this draft is short on star power, Tate has a great chance to become a front of the rotation starter in a couple of years. There’s still plenty of room for the young right-hander to grow and the high ceiling was clearly attractive to the Rangers.
