It’s no secret that the New York Mets are in desperate need of some offense. Travis d’Arnaud coming off the DL should help, but with David Wright and Daniel Murphy both absent for the foreseeable future, it looks like New York will have to look outside the organization for help. Unfortunately, in the second week of June, there are not a lot of players available on the trade market, and the Mets can’t afford to wait for a market to develop. One player the Mets may be able to get is Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Alex Guerrero, who may be available and could be New York’s best option at this point.

Guerrero isn’t perfect, but logistically, he’s a good fit for what the Mets need. He could immediately step in at third base, where the Mets need help until either Wright or Murphy returns from injury. Even if Wright were to return, having Guerrero would provide insurance in case Wright suffers a setback at some point. In the event the Mets no longer need Guerrero at third base, he could play see playing time in the outfield, which is something the Mets may need anyway with the aging and underperforming duo of Michael Cuddyer and Curtis Granderson playing the corner outfield positions.

One thing that shouldn’t be in doubt is Guerrero’s ability to hit. He has 18 extra-base hits, including 10 home runs, in just 45 games, along with a healthy .281 batting average. Those numbers would immediately make Guerrero one of the top hitters in the Mets’ lineup and a player who could make a meaningful difference.

Of course, there’s the issue of acquiring Guerrero from the Dodgers. Fortunately for the Mets, Los Angeles is in the market for pitching, which is something the Mets have plenty of. New York is anxious to trade either Dillon Gee or Jon Niese, and while they would have to give up more than that to acquire Guerrero, offering the Dodgers either Gee or Niese would be a good starting point to work out a deal.

If the Mets want to wait another month, the trade market should develop, as more teams will fall out of contention and more players become available. But with New York’s lineup so decimated by injuries, the Mets may not be able to wait that long to make a move. The team’s pitching can only carry them so far without more support from the offense. At this point, Guerrero may be the best option available if the Mets want to add offense in the immediate future.
