Philadelphia Phillies’ Promotion of Domonic Brown Shows Incompetence

The Philadelphia Phillies would be better off not rewarding incompetence.

The Phillies promoted Domonic Brown who was hitting .257 with two home runs in Triple-A baseball, and there is no one to blame but GM Ruben Amaro Jr. for that. Amaro single-handedly demolished what was once the best organization in the NL East for five-straight years. Almost every fan believes he should have been gone by now.

The people making the decisions still have him in power and it seems like Amaro — albeit unwittingly — is doing further damage with this latest move. Promoting a player who doesn’t deserve it illustrates the incompetence of the organization in general and its general manager in particular.

The player being sent down, Darin Ruf, is arguably a better one than Brown. Ruf has never been given an extended look at his natural position, first base. Brown, on the other hand, has had plenty of looks in five years and has failed to impress with the exception of one. Brown began the season on the disabled list with an Achilles injury. Two years ago, he hit .272 with 27 homers but those numbers declined sharply in 2013, as he hit just .235 with 10 home runs in 144 games. He was sent to the minors and told to show the big club some numbers that would force them to call him up.

Nothing Brown has done in Triple-A warrants a promotion, but a promotion should come as no surprise considering the people doing the promoting preside over the worst organization in baseball.
