Talent will get you far, magic will get you further. In baseball, you have to have a little bit of both to make the playoffs. If their last two games are any indication, the Toronto Blue Jays have both.
After a very slow start to the season, Toronto has gotten hot lately and they’ve never been out of games. Following their 13-10 come-from-behind win on Friday night, they had three wins over the past three years after trailing by seven or more runs. The rest of the league in that span is only 2-885 overall.
How did they follow up their incredible comeback on Friday night? They got a dramatic 5-4 win over the division rival Boston Red Sox in 11 innings. That makes two wins in two days and it has pushed Toronto to 33-30 overall on the year. They’re very much alive in the AL East race.
Some players they’ve needed production from have stepped up as well. Josh Donaldson, Edwin Encarnacion and Russell Martin have combined for eight hits over the past two days and one of those was the Martin go-ahead blast on Saturday night. With steady contributions from those guys, the Blue Jays can be contenders in the division.
The rotation may be more of a problem as starter Aaron Sanchez may miss his next start due to “upper body soreness”. After already losing Marcus Stroman for the season, they can’t afford any more injuries to key arms.
Should the rotation stay healthy and they add one or two bullpen arms, the Blue Jays are going to look strong. Their clutch hitting has already shown in the past two games that it can take them a long way.
