While a lot of attention has surrounded Cincinnati Reds’ ace Johnny Cueto, fans are well aware that he isn’t the only star pitcher on his way out. While only somewhat likely, Aroldis Chapman’s name has been linked to a couple teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Chapman’s cannon and career production should bring in a decent return for the Reds. In five seasons, Chapman has racked up 127 saves and 480 strikeouts while sporting a 2.30 earned run average.
The Dodgers currently lead the National League West by 2.5 games at 37-28, but could use another dominant arm in their bullpen. An addition of Chapman would help the Dodgers not only hold on to their division lead, but possibly increase it by closing out those close games.
So who could the Reds target?
The Reds’ needs are well documented. The three positions needing to be address include shortstop, relief pitching and outfield. The player could possibly inquire about is the Dodgers’ top prospect, shortstop Corey Seager. Seager is the brother of Seattle Mariners’ Kyle Seager. Corey is said to have a strong arm and is good hitting getting a 60 rating for both hitting and power. The thing that would change his position is his size as he stands at 6-foot-4. His stature is big for a shortstop which is why some have said he would be good at third base. One thing the Reds could do is to move him out to one of the corner outfield spots.
It all sounds good and all, but as you could expect, it would not be easy to pry away Seager from Los Angeles. So what kind of package would the Reds have to offer to intrigue the Dodgers?
Let’s start off by having Aroldis Chapman as the centerpiece. It is possible the Reds could pull off a deal by adding their No. 9 prospect, outfielder Yorman Rodriguez. It would be a two-for-one deal that would favor the Reds because they get a top prospect in return for a dominant pitcher they probably won’t be able to re-sign.
While it is unlikely the Reds would land Seager, I wouldn’t rule it completely out. Like it is frequently said, everyone has their price.
