5 New York Mets Who Deserve 2015 MLB All-Star Game Consideration

We're three months into the season and the New York Mets still sit atop the NL East. Although they don’t have any one player who stands out as an obvious All-Star, the team does have a bit of talent that deserves a chance to play in Cincinnati this summer. One primary candidate, Travis d’Arnaud, will be left off the list due to only 17 games played.

5. Juan Lagares

Stats: .280/309/.372, 30 R, 20 RBIs

Lagares’ numbers don’t pop off the page, but most of his damage at the plate has come in the last month. In fact, he’s on a hot streak right now, batting .344 in his last 15 games with seven runs scored and six RBIs. While his offense is only just coming on, he’s always been known for his phenomenal defense -- the likes of which would make fans go nuts in the All-Star Game.

4. Lucas Duda

Stats: .276/.380/.491, 10 HR, 30 RBIs

A top-eight in most statistical categories (AVG, OBP, SLG, R, HR, RBI, 2B, H, BB) should lead Duda to playing in the All-Star Game. With potential-MVP Paul Goldschmidt in the same league as Duda, he really doesn’t have a case as a starter. However, he has every right to make the team as a backup.

3. Matt Harvey

Stats: 7-4, 3.32 ERA, 88 K, 1.00 WHIP

A brief skid couldn’t stop Matt Harvey. After a 5-1 start in which he looked like a Cy Young candidate, he’s bounced back with seven shutout innings in his most recent start. If he continues pitching this way, it’s going to be difficult to keep him off the NL squad. Plus, he boasts an otherworldly 6.3 strikeouts per walk ratio.

2. Jacob deGrom

Stats: 7-4, 2.33 ERA, 90 K, 0.99 WHIP

No one would’ve guessed Harvey wouldn’t be the best starter on the Mets this year. However, deGrom is at least worthy of the co-ace title he and Harvey share. His 0.99 WHIP ranks sixth in the NL among qualified starters and his .218 batting average against ranks seventh. The reigning NL Rookie of the Year is proving he is far from a sophomore slump.

1. Jeurys Familia

Stats: 2-0, 1.39 ERA, 19 SV, 9.5 K/9, 0.93 WHIP

By far the most dominant Met this year has been Jeurys Familia. He ranks third in the NL in saves and WHIP (among closers with 10 or more saves). He was a good setup man last year and has thrived in the role of closer this year. As impressive as Harvey and deGrom have been in their starts, neither have been as consistent as Familia in the ninth. If any one Met deserves to play, it’s Familia.
