This has been a season of unexpected twists and turns in the Bronx, with most of them being positive. The New York Yankees have seen Michael Pineda take off as a potential ace, Alex Rodriguez pick up where he left off two seasons ago, and Mark Teixeira regain his All-Star form. However, an injury to Teixeira that could derail their season.
The Yankees have gotten players to step up when other players go down. One example was immediately following Jacoby Ellsbury‘s injury, when the team actually got better. Without Teixeira, who is dealing with a lingering neck injury and may have to go on the disabled list, the team may not be able to stay near the top of the AL East standings. That’s especially true with everyone in the division playing pretty even baseball.
Even though the Yankees are just one game out of first place, they’re also just one and a half games ahead of fourth place. With little room for error, the Bronx Bombers will falter without Teixeira. He has hit 18 home runs and driven in 51, making him one of the most prolific run producers in the AL.
Without that production, the Yankees are going to need more people to step up than when Ellsbury went to the DL. This time, that might just be a little too much to ask.
