Even though the New York Mets have fallen a few games behind the Washington Nationals, they are far from out of the hunt considering the temperamental nature of the NL East division leaders. It is possible they could make a run with the pieces they have, but they have been linked to rumors that could turn their entire season around. If rumors are true that the Mets are a good fit for the Colorado Rockies‘ perennial trade chip Troy Tulowitzki, the team must make that trade happen.
It almost doesn’t matter how they get the deal done at this point, as long as they make sure to keep most of their top prospects. One rumored series of talks between the Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers regarding Jon Niese could be a key point to a Tulowitzki trade as well. Many times over the last several years, a big name or two gets moved in a three-team trade. Something like that could well happen here except for the minor fact that the Rockies and Dodgers are in the same division.
Regardless of how they work to convince the Rockies to finally trade Tulowitzki, they must find a way to do it. This would be a move that would gain them arguably the best offensive and all-around shortstop in MLB. For him to key their lineup would cause a ripple effect that would improve the rest of the team.
Everyone knows the Mets have pitching, so if their offense gets a shot in the arm like that, the division lead could be theirs to keep.
