There are signs teams look for when they are looking for a new manager for their team. These are usually the same kinds of things a group looks for in any other coaching position. Can he do the job? Has he done the job before or any job like it? What do his players and past teams he managed say about him both verbally and in wins and losses.

These are the categories which should allow Ryne Sandberg another chance to manage an MLB team.

Maybe he will get on as a coach somewhere this year, but next season when the managerial merry-go-round starts, he should get serious consideration for managing somewhere at the big-league level. The situation with the Philadelphia Phillies surely gave him a lot in the way of experiencing the life of an MLB manager, but he deserves a shot to see how the other half lives as well.

Here is a guy who comes highly regarded as a pretty good young manager. Does some of that have something to do with his success as a player? The answer is no. Fans surely can easily be swayed in their decision-making by the success a manager had as a player, but that is not the case for executives at all. Sandberg has proven he can handle the daily grind as a manager. Now he just needs to get a look at how he does when leading a team with a chance to win something at the end.

Someone should give him that chance before he is written off as a manager.
