The Boston Red Sox have had a number of injuries with some key players and that might be most noticeable at the catching position. They have gone through more catchers than Spinal Tap went through drummers. Boston will have an interesting situation when they could be dealing with three catchers on the roster.

It all started with the very promising Christian Vasquez having to miss the entire season due to Tommy John surgery. That meant that Ryan Hanigan who was slated to be the backup became the starting catcher. That worked out well until Hanigan hurt his finger and has missed a few months and needed to go on the 60-day disabled list.

Blake Swihart was called up, perhaps a little sooner than expected and he has started to settle in the role offensively and defensively. He has shown why Boston has been so high on him and have refused to have him be a part of any trade for more pitching. Then there is Sandy Leon. He hasn’t hit at all but he was been amazing defensively, throwing out over 50 percent of runners trying to steal bases. He also has worked very well with Clay Buchholz.

So Hanigan is due back very soon and Boston is going to have to figure out what to do with three catchers. One possible choice is Leon, however he is out of options so the team would lose him they try to send him down. His defensive prowess is too valuable.

What should happen is Swihart could be sent down so he could play everyday and keep on working on his skills. That way he doesn’t get rusty sitting on the bench and Boston can keep Leon.

Now it will be very interesting next season once Vasquez gets healthy. That could be a real situation.
