The Cincinnati Reds’ record has improved over the last few months, and as a result, these five rumors have really gained some steam heading into July.

While his name hasn’t been mentioned too often, Jay Bruce has been whispered as an idea of a side piece to a Johnny Cueto or Aroldis Chapman deal. This move would be in order to get money off the books. Bruce’s production hasn’t been equal to the money he is currently being paid. The Reds would love to move the money, but a deal remains unlikely.

His name hasn’t been thrown around as much as teammate Johnny Cueto, but Chapman is likely to be moved so the Reds can get something in return for him. They won’t be able to afford him when his contract expires. Who his suitors are is unknown, but it will likely be a team such as the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Todd Frazier has been one of many names targeted by the New York Mets. Frazier has stated he’s happy in Cincinnati, so would the Reds really consider trading a potential All-Star starter? With Cueto and Chapman most likely leaving, Frazier seems to be a piece the Reds intend to keep for the core of their team moving forward.

2. Johnny Cueto Shipped To The Lone Star State?

Cueto has been linked to many teams, one of which is the Houston Astros. The Astros have a strong farm system given their losing ways over the past several seasons, and they are said to be more interested in Cueto than the Phillies’ Cole Hamels. The Reds could target top pitching prospect Mike Appel as part of a deal.

Cincinnati Enquirer’s John Fay says since the Reds currently stand only five games just below .500, they may take a chance and stand pat at the deadline. Their hope is that they can make a late-season surge and become a possible Wild Card contender. Right now this seems to be highly unlikely, but crazier things have happened for the Reds.
