Washington Nationals' Bryce Harper Continues To Prove Doubters Wrong
Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The 2015 MLB All-Star teams were announced on Sunday evening, and Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper was voted into his third All-Star Game in only his fourth season in the majors. In fact, Harper broke the all-time National League All-Star Team voting record, as he collected 13.86 million votes, and he was just shy of Mike Trout‘s over 14 million votes for the leader in either league.

Harper has carried the Nationals’ offense for the entire first half, as he’s hitting .346 with a .474 OBP, 25 home runs and 60 RBIs through 75 games. Harper’s resurgence can be partially attributed to a piece of advice from Nationals manager Matt Williams. Williams told Harper before the season that he should have a more patient approach and not be afraid to take walks. Williams felt that Harper was trying to do too much in previous seasons and needed to be more selective at the plate. Harper has taken the advice to heart, as he’s collected 60 walks already — as opposed to 64 strikeouts — which is impressive.

While Harper is best known for what he’s done at the plate, he’s been just as impressive defensively in right field, which is a brand new position for him. With Jayson Werth aging and losing a step or two, the Nationals decided before the season that they would move Harper from left to right because of his athleticism and his cannon of an arm. Harper has made the transition smoothly, and besides his tendency to occasionally airmail a cut-off man, Harper has looked like he has played right field all his life.

With the season essentially at its halfway point, Harper has to be considered the favorite for NL MVP. His 5.4 WAR is the best in the MLB, and he’s produced these astounding numbers without much protection around him. Werth, Ryan Zimmerman and Anthony Rendon have all missed big chunks of the season, but it hasn’t mattered. Harper is on pace to hit 50 home runs and drive in 120 RBIs. If he stays on or around this pace, Harper will be collecting a lot of hardware at the end of the season, possibly even the Commissioner’s Trophy.
