If you take a look at the Cincinnati Reds’ farm system, you’ll notice they have a stockpile of young arms. The Reds recently promoted top-prospect, pitcher Robert Stephenson, to Triple-A on Friday. While Stephenson has garnered a lot of attention, there is another prospect who is just as deserving of a promotion.

Who am I talking about you ask?

I am talking about Daytona Tortugas left-handed pitcher Amir Garrett.

Garrett, the Reds’ No. 4 prospect, has been an effective pitcher this season in Advanced-A ball with the Tortugas. In 16 games started, he has held batters to a .236 batting average in 79 innings. He has not only proven he can hold batters to low average, but that he can control his pitches as seen in his low total of 33 walks he’s issued on the season.

The only concern some may have is with his record, which stands at 4-5. The issue with putting too much emphasis on a record can be illustrated with Garrett. In four of his five losses, his offense scored one or zero runs. You cannot expect to get the win with an offense that has trouble scoring.

With lack of support aside, Garrett has also shown his ability to strike opponents out as he has racked up 87 strikeouts in his 16 starts. His stats are a testimony to the improvement he has shown over this year and they are paying off.

His improvement is not only impressing coaches, but the league as well. He recently received an invite to be a member of the U.S. team for the 2015 MLB All-Star Futures Game during the All-Star Break in his parent club’s city of Cincinnati.

If a pitcher has earned a 2.73 ERA in 16 games, it may be time to turn the notch up to the next level and promote him. Garret has proven he is ready for the next level and has earned the promotion to Double-A ball in Pensacola. With Stephenson’s promotion to AAA, Garrett can fill that spot that Stephenson’s departure left.

So, Cincinnati, it’s your call. To promote Garrett, or not to promote Garrett? That is the question, but we all know what the answer should be. Now why don’t you make a call down to Daytona.
