The Detroit Tigers' 2015 season has been a huge disappointment so far. They currently sit one game above .500 at 41-40. Here are five players the Tigers should target before the trade deadline to help them make a second-half surge.

Jonathan Papelbon is having one of his best seasons of his career, posting a 1.65 ERA in 31 games with 14 saves in 14 chances. Papelbon does have a hefty contract, however the Phillies know any trade for him would require themselves to cover some of that money. If the Tigers can get the Phillies to cover a good portion of his contract they would jump at it. Their bullpen needs arms that can shut down batters and Papelbon is just that.

Samardzija has had a respectable season but has been victim of anemic White Sox offense. His ERA rose to 4.33 largely in part to two starts last month where he combined to give up 15 runs in 12.1 innings. While he is not a top-end arm, he could serve as a good middle-of-the-rotation arm. Given the Tigers’ 4.34 ERA by their starters, Samardzija could come in and help out immediately.

Cole Hamels time in Philadelphia is over and the Tigers could use a starter. The Tigers have the money and prospects to make a trade work. Hamels record does not illustrate how well he has pitched. The Phillies’ anemic offense at time has resulted in numerous no decisions for Hamels. He could be a good pitcher to put behind David Price in the rotation.
2. Tyler Clippard

Tyler Clippard has been an effective force in the Athletics’ bullpen. In 33 games, he has posted a 2.60 ERA while holding opponents to an impressive .177 batting average. The Tigers’ bullpen has shown signs of struggle at times, and as a result have combined for a 3.96 ERA on the season. Clippard can come in and immediately help their bullpen shut opponents down and help secure close games.

The Tigers' starting pitching has been one of the main sources behind their struggles. They have combined for a 4.34 ERA. Cueto can give the Tigers a starter with quality outings on a consistent basis. While Cueto’s contract ends at the end of the season, the Tigers have the ability to give Cueto the money he deserves.
