Josh Donaldson Amazingly Sets MLB All-Star Game Voting Record
Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

When the Toronto Blue Jays acquired Josh Donaldson in an offseason trade with the Oakland Athletics, it shocked everyone in the baseball world. Donaldson was coming off the best two seasons of his career, and looked to be still in his prime.

Well, based on the first half of the 2015 MLB Season, A’s GM Billy Beane made a colossal mistake. Donaldson is hitting .296 with a .352 OBP, 19 home runs and 56 RBIs. He has been the MVP of the Blue Jays all season long. In fact, it was just announced that Donaldson has been voted in by fans to start his first career MLB All-Star Game in his second appearance.

Even more impressively, Donaldson collected 14,090,188 votes to break the all-time record, which was previously held by Josh Hamilton.

It’s mind-blowing to me that a players from Toronto was able to break the voting record. With Kansas City Royals fans stuffing boxes, it seemed at one point that Donaldson wouldn’t even be starting the All-Star Game, let alone breaking an all-time record. I guess it proves that baseball is actually popular north of the border.

The unfortunate part for Donaldson is that the Blue Jays are only 43-41, and sit two games behind the AL East division-leading, New York Yankees. The Blue Jays’ offense certainly isn’t the problem, as the team has scored 81 runs more than any other team in MLB,thanks in large part to Donaldson. The culprit has been the pitching staff.

Collectively, the Blue Jays rank 25th in MLB with a 4.24 ERA. While the bullpen has a satisfactory 3.58 ERA, the Blue Jays’ have a starters’ ERA of 4.58. If the team is going to make a run towards the playoffs and put Donaldson in the MVP discussion, GM Alex Anthopoulos must fix the starting rotation.
