Ruben Amaro Jr. is the luckiest man on the planet to have kept his job with the Philadelphia Phillies this long. He took over a World Series Champion team in 2009 after being promoted from assistant general manager to general manager of the Phillies. Since that point, he’s done nothing but drive the organization further and further into the ground, while somehow maintaining his position. Things might finally come to an end, as Amaro Jr. continues to speak without a filter.

Amaro Jr. was asked if Chase Utley would be the team’s starting second baseman once he returns from the disabled list. While every other MLB general manager would have answered the question with a “We’ll have to see where he’s at when he returns,” or a “We haven’t thought that far ahead yet,” Amaro Jr. said, “Not for me he’s not. Cesar Hernandez is our best second baseman.” It really makes one wonder if the Philadelphia sports-talk radio shows pay Amaro Jr. to say dumb stuff around a microphone because he does it on the regular.

Although he’s not wrong based on the performances each player has put together this season, there’s a certain way to handle questions like this, and Amaro Jr. obviously doesn’t partake in the give-an answer-without-really-giving-an-answer style of handling the media.

Utley is still a fan favorite, and making comments like this will only make the call for Amaro Jr.’s head even louder. Last month, he bluntly called Phillies fans “stupid,” and said, “They don’t understand the game.” With new team president, Andy MacPhail now in charge, it’s only a matter of time until he will reach a boiling point over having to put out fires started by Amaro Jr. While most people would be trying to impress their new boss, Amaro Jr. has certainly chosen to do the exact opposite, or maybe he’s just trying the George Costanza approach.
