The Atlanta Braves recently signed Vin Mazzaro to a minor league deal. It’s no secret that the Braves need to add reliable arms to their bullpen, so the signing makes sense, but it also might point to the team’s rumored plans to trade closer Jason Grilli.

Whether to the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers or another reliever-needy team, expect Grilli to be gone within the next couple of weeks, leaving Jim Johnson as the closer. Even with the plethora of arms the team currently has both in the majors and the minors, as well as Mazzaro, the Braves still don’t have enough to make a dent in the NL East deficit.

What they need is more. The Dodgers released Brandon League, the Detroit Tigers released Joba Chamberlain, and other minor moves have happened all over MLB. If the Braves can pull the right strings, it’s possible they can send their surprisingly successful closer elsewhere and still improve the bullpen by picking up arms on minor league deals.

Johnson probably will not be as automatic as the closer as Grilli, but he would be good enough if the Braves can add bullpen arms to back him up. The Braves have been able to revive relievers’ careers in the past, and Grilli and Johnson are the latest examples of this fact. Look for them to continue this in the coming weeks, and don’t be surprised if it all works out.
