After the best first half in the AL East, the New York Yankees are attempting to correct their lone weak spot as they have promoted second baseman Rob Refsnyder. Manager Joe Girardi said the plan is for Refsnyder to make the next two starts before the All-Star break against Boston Red Sox southpaws Eduardo Rodriguez and Wade Miley.

Refsnyder, ranked the Yankees’ No. 5 prospect by MLB.com, is hitting .290 in Triple-A with seven home runs, 37 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. He is in the midst of his first year at second base after transitioning from the outfield. A fifth-round selection in the 2012 draft from the University of Arizona, he has committed 13 errors this season, but has shown improvement with just two miscues since May 23.

The Yankees have not announced who will be taken off the team’s 40-man roster. Refsnyder is not currently not on the roster, but the Yankees do have three options to designate for assignment: Stephen Drew, Cole Figueroa or Gregorio Petit. If he comes out to a strong start, Refsnyder could begin the second half in pinstripes as the everyday second baseman.
