Recent Outings by Philadelphia Phillies' Cole Hamels Giving Trade Partners Cold Feet

Whenever Cole Hamels says something, the talk invariably turns to wanting to pitch for a winner. When he goes to the mound, though, all of the other body language is pointing to a long stay with the Philadelphia Phillies, an organization farther away from being a winner than any other in MLB.

Hamels was bombed in his last start, leaving what would become a 15-2 Friday night loss to the San Francisco Giants after giving up nine earned runs and tying a career high by giving up 12 hits all in  just 3 1/3 innings, while matching a career high by giving up 12 hits. It was his shortest start since April 5, 2011. Now it appears that potential trade partners are getting cold feet.

What made this important at all is that every start made by Hamels comes under the scrutiny of scouts employed by teams thinking about pulling the trigger on a potential trade. If the Phillies thought they were being low-balled with offers for Hamels before his last start, clearly they are not going to get blown away over the next week or so. While no one believes he is blowing up on purpose, Hamels is not helping his stated cause of moving to a contender with starts like that. Hamels entered the contest with a 3.02 ERA but the figure had ballooned to 3.63 by the end of the night.

The Phillies are caught between a rock and a hard place with Hamels. They want to trade him, but not for a pair of mid-level prospects. If the team is offered two top Triple-A prospects or a current everyday player, they might be more inclined to pull the trigger. None of the potential deals for Hamels have hinted at that kind of compensation.

Mix in the worst start of his career and that’s a formula that probably means Hamels is not going anywhere right now. That might change after the season is over, but probably not before.
