5 Hypothetical Trades the Seattle Mariners Could Make At The Deadline

The Seattle Mariners are probably wishing 2015 would come to a merciful end, as they entered the season with World Series hopes only to crash and burn. With an eye towards the future, here are 5 moves that would help them out beyond this year. Keep in mind that all trade offers made here are incredibly bad and will never, ever come to pass.

5. Austin Jackson For Chasen Shreve

Jackson has been one of the more dismal batters on the roster, but a return to the New York Yankees, the organization that drafted him -- and Yankee Stadium, a far kinder ballpark to righties -- could do wonders for his counting stats. In return, the Mariners would receive a reliable bullpen arm in Shreve, who would give them some needed flexibility as well as a strikeout specialist, and allow them to trade closer Fernando Rodney.

4. Fernando Rodney For Gavin Cecchini

Moving Rodney may be easier said than done, but a sucker is born every minute, and one of those suckers happens to run the New York Mets. Cecchini would give the Mariners another option up the middle, one who has more upside than Brad Miller and is younger/more cost-controllable than Robinson Cano. The team would also have to kick in some cash to make up the difference, likely the remainder of the $7 million Rodney is owed this year.

3. Logan Morrison For Travis Wood

Morrison will never fulfill the promise he showed in Miami, but his bat still has a good deal of pop in it. Still, this would constitute as selling low for both teams, as he'd be an erstwhile first baseman/outfielder for the Chicago Cubs. In return, the Mariners could use Travis Wood, another player who has shown flashes of brilliance, either as a starter or long relief guy. Moving to less hitter-friendly confines would also help Wood a lot.

2. Mike Montgomery For Jorge Bonifacio

Sending Montgomery back to the Kansas City Royals, his original team, might seem silly as he's finally begun to pay dividends after waiting so long to shine in the Show. His value will likely never be higher than it is now, though, so the Mariners would do well to take advantage of that. Getting Bonifacio in return would give the team a long-term power option in the outfield, something they're currently lacking beyond Nelson Cruz.

1. Seth Smith For Salary Relief

Smith is under contract through the end of the 2016 season, and the Los Angeles Angels' outfield options look pretty scant past His Holiness Mike Trout. If the Mariners could get their division rival to take on the remainder of Smith's contract, they could recoup the money lost from dealing Rodney and have some extra cash left over to throw at another first baseman/corner outfielder/DH next offseason. Hooray!
