Jacob deGrom's Stellar All-Star Performance Not A Surprise

Those that tuned in yesterday for the 2015 MLB All-Star game, saw that there was no shortage of entertainment. In the very first at-bat, Mike Trout took Zack Greinke deep for a lead-off home run. This had not been done in an All-Star game, since Bo Jackson had done so in 1989. This set the tone for viewers to be in for an exciting game to watch.

The American League eventually would win the game 6-3, and earn home-field advantage in the World Series this year. However, the New York Mets young ace Jacob deGrom stole the show in just one inning of work. For those national viewers who don’t get to watch Mets baseball often, they got a first hand look on just how dominant deGrom has been. He was the NL Rookie of the Year last year, and earned himself his first trip to the All-Star game this year.

DeGrom came into the game during the sixth inning and struck out the side. The most impressive thing was that he had done so by only throwing ten pitches. This had not been done before ever in MLB All-Star Game history. DeGrom looked like a seasoned veteran out there. He did a great job of bringing the heat, and locating his pitches well.

His history-making performance has shocked some, but this is something that isn’t very far fetched when you put his body of work into perspective. He has 112 strikeouts in 113.2 innings of work. The strikeout is something that deGrom has not only gotten regularly, but also when needed in pitching jams throughout the year. He has only walked 21 batters all year, which shows that he has great command of all the pitches in his repertoire.

The star player showcased his great fastball, and filthy slider in last night’s Midsummer Classic. The hitters he faced, just never seemed to have a chance. Since his slow start, deGrom has been showing more confidence, which has translated to the dominant pitcher seen last night. It is not surprising that deGrom pitched as well as he did last night. However, the Mets will need him to continue with his excellent performances if they are going to make a playoff run this year.
